SportPartner Helps a City-Girl Hike

You’d think meeting people with similar interests in a big city would be easy - After all, there are over a million people living here. But the truth is, it’s not as easy as most people think. In fact, it can be downright difficult. I’m not here to speak-ill of where I live, but honestly, it feels so crowded and impersonal at times that it can drive a person insane.

Anyway, bringing it back to SportPartner, I’m a woman that loves to hike. Like, seriously, I love it.

Hiking in the city is obviously impossible unless you’re hitting the stairs in a skyscraper or high rise, so enjoying the outdoors (aside from the park) means getting outside of the city. Doing that means knowing someone with a car (which is like 1% of the city population), renting a car or doing something like hiring a taxi (which can be expensive).

More than anything, I don’t really want to spend hours in a car and then hours on a hiking trail all by myself. Everything from the car ride to the hike would be more enjoyable if I had another person to spend the day with.

When I found SportPartner online, I have to admit that I was skeptical. I had never heard of the service before and wasn’t sure how well it would work, but considering that basic memberships are free, I figured I didn’t have anything to lose by signing up.

After getting familiar with the website, I found some profiles of people living around the city who shared my passion for getting well-outside the urban jungle. Eventually I managed to make contact with a few of the people I originally messaged and we decided to split the cost of a car rental and head out to a wilderness area less than two hours away.

The day was incredible. We had lots of laughs, some tremendous exercise and a beautiful picnic in a small sun-lit meadow.

In the two months since that first meeting, our group has gone out for weekend adventures three other times! I love the hikes and the people I’ve been lucky enough to meet.

Without SportPartner, I don’t know if any of this would have been possible. My hope is that by sharing my story, other people will feel inspired to sign up and grow the SportPartner network.

Happy Hiking!
